Sound Explorations:
Works by Volker Straebel

AUTOMATA' s Experimental Sound series TAPETAIL presents:

Sound Explorations
by Volker Straebel
Performed by Michael Matsuno, Tim Feeney and Volker Straebel

Sound Explorations is a double entendre: The exploration of (audible) sounds and an exploration that is solid and thorough. The last piece of the evening includes oceanic terms and might suggest that “sound” stands for a body of water. It’s confusing (in a good way).

Volker Straebel presents his quiet experimental music with silences that leave room for reflection and anticipation. A list of adjectives from an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson. But which entities do these attributes describe? When we hear the list of nouns, their qualifiers are forgotten or can no longer be connected reliably. Spectral re-synthesis of spoken words transforms morphemes into pure sound that carries meaning we can no longer access. Tim Feeney (percussionist) and Michael Matsuno (speaker), staples of the L.A. experimental music scene, secure the poetic quality of the event.

About the Artist

Volker Straebel is a musicologist, composer, and curator. He grew up in Berlin (West), Germany, and moved to Los Angeles in 2021. Straebel’s academic work, which focuses on experimental music and sound art, and his artistic practice complement each other. His compositions and performances range from amplified jackstraws to inaudible infrasonic pieces. He has also realized, staged, and performed indeterminate works by John Cage and others. Straebel serves as the Dean of the Herb Alpert School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

Tapetail is Automata’s new experimental sound series, launched in October 2022.

Tapetail presents live events and sound installations featuring the work of experimental sound artists.
We are currently looking to present shows and installations that deal with "liveness" where something about the experience is best presented live, whether through improvisation, special acoustic treatment or audience experience. There’s been a lot of great art happening in the virtual and digital world so now we’re turning our focus back towards bringing people together for sound experiences that are best experienced in a live setting.

Automata’s Tapetail series
is curated by Cassia Streb.
