Great News!
Automata has been awarded The Jim Henson Foundation’s Emergency Funding for Puppet Theaters 2020.Automata is excited to announce that we have been awarded a grant from The Jim Henson Foundation, as one of 20 organizations that regularly support and present puppet theater. Automata plans to use this funding to further support new work by Los Angeles artists creating new experimental work for puppet theater, and to organize and present an exuberant community event upon our safe return to our space in Chinatown. To read the full announcement from The Jim Henson Foundation, and to learn more about the 20 organizations awarded this funding, please click HERE. Automata wishes to express our deepest gratitude to The Jim Henson Foundation for this gift, and for their longstanding support of artists working in puppetry across the country. This is a very challenging time for Automata and the many small nonprofit arts organizations dedicated to new work development and presentation. We founded Automata in 2004 with the goal of making a home for experimental puppetry in Los Angeles, while creating a context for this work in which visual art, performance, film/video, interactive technology, experimental music, and experimental writing intersect with the puppet and its contemporary siblings. If you are in a position to do so please consider making a donation to Automata or becoming a member at this time. We are looking at many months without live programming and event income. But we want to keep presenting work online for now, and offering opportunities for artists to continue to develop new work through commissions and solo or small ensemble residencies when things open up. We can do so with your help.
